Does the thought of being around a lot of people make you sick to your stomach? Social anxiety can manifest in different ways. From canceling plans, to overthinking, drinking alcohol for confidence, avoiding, sweating, increased heart rate…
Although I have a lot of experience public speaking and holding space for people, when it comes to going to a social event, I have a lot of anxiety that comes up.
Here are some tips to overcome social anxiety:
1. Practice deep breathing techniques: Take deep breaths in and out when feeling anxious. This can help to calm your mind and reduce feelings of anxiety.
2. Challenge negative thoughts: Identify and challenge negative thoughts that may lead to social anxiety. Replace negative thoughts with more positive, realistic thoughts to help you feel more confident.
3. Start small: Practice socializing in small groups or with someone you trust. Gradually increase the size of the group and the amount of social interaction.
4. Seek support: Consider talking to a mental health professional or wellness practitioner about your social anxiety. They can provide support and help you develop coping strategies.
5. Use relaxation techniques: Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, or mindfulness to help reduce overall anxiety levels.
6. Take the focus off yourself: Let’s be real, most people are not thinking about us, they’re too worried thinking about themselves.
Social anxiety is a common condition and you are not alone. With practice and support, you can learn to manage your anxiety and increase your self-confidence.
