EP 71: Steps to Heal from Burnout and Achieve Sustainable Success
Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s been weighing heavily on many of my clients: burnout. It’s become alarmingly common, and I see it manifesting across all walks of life. Whether you’re a busy executive, a dedicated parent, or simply trying to juggle the many demands of life, it’s easy to feel depleted and overwhelmed, no matter how much rest you think you’re getting.
The Widespread Impact of Burnout
Did you know that an estimated 54% of people in the U.S. report feeling burnt out? It’s a staggering statistic that highlights how prevalent this issue has become. But what exactly is burnout, and how does it happen?
At its core, burnout is the result of chronic stress—when your body and mind are in a constant state of overwhelm. This can stem from various sources, including unprocessed trauma from childhood or ongoing pressures in your career. Many high achievers I work with—executives, founders, and successful professionals—often find themselves in this cycle. They might have achieved everything they thought would bring them happiness and fulfillment, yet they still feel empty and exhausted.
Recognizing the Signs
So how do you know if you’re experiencing burnout? Here are some telltale signs to watch for:
Extreme Exhaustion: You feel drained, no matter how much sleep you get.
Emotional Depletion: Irritability and mood swings become part of your daily life.
Brain Fog: Difficulty concentrating, multitasking, and meeting deadlines can signal burnout.
Physical Symptoms: Digestive issues, chronic pain, headaches, or other stress-related ailments are your body’s way of saying “enough!”
Isolation: You might find yourself withdrawing from social interactions, preferring to hide away instead of engaging with loved ones.
These signs reflect that you’re living in a state of chronic stress, and if left unaddressed, this can lead to more serious health issues down the road.
Moving Towards Healing
If any of this resonates with you, know that there is hope. Healing from burnout is not just about taking a break; it’s about changing the way you engage with your life. Here are some strategies that I help my clients implement to reclaim their energy and joy:
1. Set Clear Boundaries
Women, in particular, often struggle with saying “no.” It’s vital to protect your time and energy by being discerning about what you agree to do. Create space in your schedule to recharge, and don’t hesitate to delegate tasks that drain you.
2. Prioritize Self-Care
Self-care goes beyond spa days; it’s about nurturing your mind and body. Consider integrating practices like breathwork into your routine. Breathwork not only helps regulate your nervous system but also enables you to listen to your body and address the underlying stressors that contribute to burnout.
3. Let Go of Perfectionism
Many high achievers struggle with the desire for control. Understand that you don’t have to do everything yourself. Allowing others to help you doesn’t mean sacrificing your standards; it means empowering others and freeing yourself from unnecessary burdens.
4. Seek Support
It’s essential to have someone in your corner who can help you recognize the patterns that contribute to your burnout. Sometimes, our old beliefs and inherited programming hold us back. By working with a coach or therapist, you can gain fresh perspectives and practical tools to break free from these cycles.
My Approach to Healing
In my one-on-one sessions, we begin with a check-in to explore what’s working and what’s not. Then, we engage in somatic practices to help regulate your nervous system. My clients often leave these sessions feeling as if they’ve just returned from a vacation—rested, clear, and energized.
It’s important to note that healing from burnout is a journey that requires openness and willingness to explore your feelings. By processing and managing stress effectively, you can regain your clarity and reclaim your voice. You’ll learn to communicate your needs and desires more assertively, empowering yourself to make choices that serve your well-being.
